Alice Beth Landrus Carpenter

A persistent spirit, a giving heart, a brave soul and a heaping amount of organization and hard work is the formula that comprised Alice Beth Landrus Carpenter, daughter, sister, wife, aunt and great friend, who died February 22, 2024, in Thomasville, NC. She was 92.

Born February 20, 1932, in Lacon, IL., Alice was the daughter of Raymond Gilbert Landrus and Viola Smith Landrus, who preceded her in death. She attended Chenoa High School and graduated in 1950. That same year, she began her career at State Farm Insurance in Bloomington, IL., as a typist, later moving to the offices in Murfreesboro, TN, and worked as a secretary and administrative assistant until her retirement in 1998. While living in Nashville and working in Murfreesboro, she met and married Wendell G. Carpenter in 1955, who died in 2004. Alice moved to Thomasville in 2020, to be closer to her brother Edward and his family.

Alice was a longtime member of Belmont Heights Baptist Church and served in the Ladies Auxiliary of Baptist Hospital, both in Nashville. She was also a member of International Association of Administrative Personnel, serving in various offices in the local and division chapters; she was named secretary of the year in 1970. She was known by family, friends and co-workers for her sugar cookies and buttermilk cakes. Alice enjoyed the humorous writings of Erma Bombeck and the antics of Grand Ole Opry’s Minnie Pearl.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Alice was preceded in death by siblings Lois Jean Landrus, Rolland Landrus, Willis Landrus, Charles (Chuck) Landrus, Eunice Landrus Opper Adcock and Gilbert (Gib) Landrus. She is survived by brothers Edward Landrus of Thomasville, NC; Harold Landrus of Cleveland, TN, and Raymond Landrus of Hazelwood, MO. She was loved and will be missed by her 17 nieces and nephews.

The family appreciates all the staff who cared for Alice at Piedmont Crossing Every Age Living Center in Thomasville. In addition, palliative care staff at Thomasville Medical Center provided Alice with excellent comfort and care. A graveside service will be held in Nashville March 9, at 1:30 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery. Donations in her memory can be made to charities of the donors’ choosing.
