He was the 7th and youngest child of Johnny William and Myrtie Willis West. His childhood and teenage years were spent in their home place in McNary, Rapides Parish, Louisiana. He was a member of Glenmora First Baptist Church. He enjoyed his school years, from 1st to 12th grades, attending Glenmora Grammer and High School. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Brenda Melder, in 1961, he relocated to Houston, Harris County, Texas. He was employed and eventually retired with Harris County Flood Control District.
Larry was a die hard NASCAR fan. For several years he loved the thrill of racing his souped up Rebel SST sponsored by Space City Rambler Dealership. He loved the NASCAR sport but cared most for his favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt. Dale initially drove car #8 and later drove car #3. It is interesting to note he requested to have 83 roses for his memorial service.
Larry and Brenda were blessed to share their lives, family vacations, weekends at the beach, birthdays, holidays, and any possible occasion to celebrate with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren for more than sixty years.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents Johnny William and Myrtie Willis West, two sisters Ruthie Thacker and Billie Smith, two brothers Donald West and Arnold West, and one son-in-law Donald Pope.
