He graduated from Hinds High School in Raymond, Mississippi where he excelled in basketball, president of the senior class and played football. He attended Hinds Junior College and Mississippi State College. He married Louise Stubbs in 1956 and celebrated 65 years of marriage in November of 2021, all the while raising FOUR crazy kids…Sandra, Kathy, Mike and Scott. In 1958, he entered the US Army serving in the 31st Infantry Division and spent 8 years in the Mississippi National Guard. After moving to Texas in 1967, he worked for the Texas Highway Department as a surveyor, later forming his own company, Smith Surveyors in 1969. His earliest ambitions were to own his own company and he realized that dream 6 times. After Smith Surveyors, he went on to form his own construction company, Northeast Houston Construction in 1972, followed by several others in the 1990s. He then went on to work for Woodlands Development Company from 1999-2013. He eventually eased his way into retirement and helped his sons reach their goals.
Jerry was a member of The Woodlands Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Rex Smith.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Louise, are his daughter, Sandi Smith Taylor, daughter, Kathy Smith, son, Mike Smith and his wife Paula, and son, Scott Smith; four grandchildren, Lexi and Preston Taylor, Sofi Aaron Smith and Douglas DePriest and his wife, Jill; one great grandchild, Carrol DePriest; one sister, Winnie Ferguson and many nieces and nephews. Also he leaves many, many friends that loved and cherished their time with him over the years.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 10:00am with a reception following service at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home, 18000 I45 S, The Woodlands, TX 77384.
