Calla Delaney Schulz

Calla Delaney Schulz was born to Jeremy and Amanda Schulz on April 18, 2006, in Seattle, Washington. On that same day, she was baptized by her father in the NICU. Through water and the Word, Calla was adopted into God’s family. Calla was the oldest of two children.

Calla spent her first twelve years in Puyallup, Washington. She received great medical care from Seattle Children’s Hospital with so many incredible doctors, especially Dr. Dan Doherty. She worked many hard hours at Children’s Therapy Unit (CTU) in PT and OT with Ms. Meredith, Ms. Kendra, and Ms. Brandi. She attended Wildwood Park and Brouillet Elementary Schools. Six of her years were spent with her teacher, Mr. Don Jackson and “the Jackson Five.” In 2011 Calla became the proud big sister of Hazel, who she affectionately referred to as “Her.” Calla loved hiking up mountains with her parents, exploring Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, and frequenting the local coffee shops.

In 2018, Calla moved to Texas. She loved swimming in the pool, relaxing in the hot tub, and rolling on trails in The Woodlands. She loved looking at Christmas lights, and The Woodlands did not disappoint. Calla attended McCullough Junior High and The Woodlands High School. She was enrolled in the Life Skills program under the wonderful director Mrs. Boyles. She loved her teachers: Mrs. Maberry, Mrs. Young, and Mrs. Lee. She was cared for by many paras and staff members. She loved being with her sweet friends, attending Meet in the Middle Club, going to the homecoming dances, and showing off her nail polish. She loved riding on the bus, especially with longtime drivers Ms. Tonya and Ms. Keisha. Calla spent much time and her last days of life in the compassionate care of nurses and physicians at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Calla’s favorite things were: going on vacations, seeing extended family, playing with her sister, snuggling with her mother, getting her nails polished by her dad, watching home movies, seeing babies on YouTube, listening to stories on CDs, eating Cheetos, and making a mess. She always looked forward to the next big event, which hopefully included a hotel room where she could watch TV in bed.

Her Savior Jesus and time at church was very important in Calla’s life. She was a part of the church families at Faith Lutheran Church in Tacoma, Washington, and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in The Woodlands, Texas. She enjoyed going to Sunday School, hearing the music in worship, holding a candle at Christmas, and laughing at dad’s sermon jokes. It inspired us to see her faith shining in these ways. How comforting it is to know her faith was strengthened as she regularly heard the Word of God.

Calla was no stranger to hardship and struggle. Yet, while that seems like it would only be sad, she had so much joy and love. She showed everyone her beautiful smile. She taught her family what was truly important in life.

Calla is preceded in death by her grandpa Wayne Schulz (Papa) and by her infant cousin Owen Mattek. Calla is survived by her parents, Jeremy and Amanda Schulz; her sister Hazel Schulz; her grandparents Anita (Nana) and Ron Hahm, John and Sandy Howell; and by many loving uncles, aunts, and cousins.

On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, due to her restrictive lung disease, the Savior Jesus, who does all things well, called Calla to the place he had prepared for her with his perfect life and innocent death. We who remain behind cling to Jesus Christ and await that great day when we, together with our loved one gone ahead, will be with our Savior forever. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever.

The funeral will be on Saturday, March 9, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 9191 Cochran’s Crossing Dr, The Woodlands, TX. Visitation is from 9:30-11:00 AM. The Funeral Service is at 11:00 AM. A lunch will follow the Funeral Service.
