Susan McKibben Schwartz-Flinn peacefully passed away on Sunday, April 24, surrounded by family at Union hospital after a prolonged illness. Susan was born July 8, 1940 to Robert and Anne McKibben of Terre Haute, Indiana. Susan had a full and beautiful life with her husband, family and friends. Susan was a graduate of St. Louis University and she had a fulfilling career as a nutrition educator working with low income families through Purdue Extension. Susan was the proud mother of two loving daughters, Lisa Schwartz and Joan Turner. She lived in Denver, Colorado for 12 years where she was married to Jerry Schwartz and had her two daughters. After his unexpected death, she returned to Terre Haute in 1982 to continue raising her daughters and to be close to family. Susan was a faithful member of her church community St Ann’s, and presently Sacred Heart. Susan found love again after many years when she met James Flinn in 2011 and married him in 2013.
Susan was a compassionate and gentle person who always had a kind word to say about everyone. She was very spiritual and loved her music, piano, swimming, family and friends. She enjoyed scripture and bible study and service to the community. She always put others ahead of herself. Susan also started Single and Single Again in 1985 where she was responsible for helping many people find their life partners.
Susan was the eldest of five siblings who were with her when she departed. She is survived by her loving husband James Flinn, her brother Joe McKibben and wife Marcia of Terre Haute, John McKibben and wife Pat of St. Petersburg, FL, Tom McKibben and wife Maria of Morton, IL, and Jane McKibben Kaer and husband Bob of Berkeley, Ca. Her daughters Lisa Schwartz and partner Amanda Babb, and Joan Turner and fiancé Steve Morris all of Terre Haute. Susan has 5 grandchildren, Taylor and Mason Turner, and Alexis, Brendan, and Trase Morris. 4 great grandchildren, 10 nieces and nephews and 11 great nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Sacred Heart Church. There will be a Prayer Service and Rosary on Thursday, April 28th from 6 to 8 PM. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held Friday, April 29th at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church with family visitation at 9 AM. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Catholic Charities Terre Haute, IN.
