A visitation will take place on Friday, May 19, 2023 from 1:00pm until the time of service at 2:00pm at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home 3110 Airport Rd. Temple, Texas 76504. Rev. Bill Ray Crow will officiate. A private family burial will take place at Davilla Cemetery in Davilla, Texas.
Jim was a 1954 graduate of Andrews High School in Andrews, Texas, served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1962. In 1978 Jim and his son Gary started Cox Machine Shop in Guymon, OK which they owned until 1980. On August 3, 1984 he married the former Margaret White Gommert. He then moved to Temple to manage Purvis Industries until he retired in 2011.
Jim loved the beach. He enjoyed taking vacations with the family to Port Aransas as well as taking his camper on fishing trips. He enjoyed working outside on their farm, raising cattle and German Shepherds, he was an avid horseback rider and gardener and loved anything to do on his tractor. Jim was the #1 Dallas Cowboys fan and has been a fan since their inception in 1960. But most of all Jim’s love was for his family. He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, pawpaw, and friend.
He is preceded in death by his parents Lucy and Duell Cox, a sister Wanda Barnes and a brother Duane Cox.
Jim is survived by his wife Margaret Cox of Rogers, children, Larry Cox of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Garry Cox and wife Deborah of Coleman, Texas, Russell Cox and wife Amy of Wimberley, Texas, Lesa Shubert and husband James of Magnolia, Texas, Richard Gommert and wife Saowanee of Rogers, Texas, Mitch Mason and wife Jackie of Davilla, Texas, Sherri Nabours and husband Barry John of Academy, Texas, and Sheila Tucker and husband Randy of Rogers, Texas, bother Richard Cox of Dallas, Texas, sister Beverly Pruitt of Garland, Texas, several nieces and nephews, 13 grandchildren, Ricky Cox and wife Adelle of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Bobby Cox and wife Kelly of Coleman, Texas, Alisha Boone and husband Clark of Hico, Texas, Janette Derrick and husband Monty of Maypearl, Texas, Matthew Cox and wife Tara of Coleman, Texas, Courtney Ringo of Arlington, Texas, Whitney Hancock of Arvada, Co, Tanner Hancock of Little Elm, Texas, Koby Petter of Temple, Texas, Ricky Gommert of Rogers, Texas, Stephanie Gommert of Boulder, Colorado, Vanessa Tucker of San Maros, Texas, and Nolan Mason of Davilla, Texas, and 14 great-grandchildren.
