Betty Jo “B.J.” Jackson (nee: Burrell) passed away October 28th in Tampa Florida after a long illness. She was 85. Born Betty Jo Burrell on February 4, 1930 a lifelong resident of Tampa/Temple Terrace, she graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1948 and went on to complete her nursing degree from the Gordon Keller School of Nursing on Davis Islands. Married to Randolfph C. Jackson in 1952, B.J. and Randy designed and built two homes both in Temple Terrace. An accomplished artist, B.J. won numerous local and state awards for her modern approach to sand relief sculpture. Mrs. Jackson was commissioned by several Tampa businesses to produce her sand sculptures which adorned both MacDill Airforce Base library and a large panel instillation depicting Seminole Indian culture at the Thonotosassa Elementary school. She also enjoyed flower arranging, drawing, painting and weaving. Instilling a love for art and creativity was B.J.’s greatest gift. Betty Jo is survived by her daughter Brett Jackson Martin and son-in-law Michael Martin of New York. Her granddaughters Courtney Jackson Nemec of Friendswood Texas and Amy Jackson of Conroe Texas. Great-granddaughter Kendall Nemec. She is preceded in death by her husband Randy in 2006 and Son Stewart in 2007. The family is planning a private memorial ceremony on New Year ’s Eve. Brett Jackson would like to thank the entire staff and nurses of Palm Garden Tampa for their kind support, tireless service and personable professionalism during B.J.’s stay with them. In addition, much love and thanks to both Marvin and Mark Shumate, and Mr. Les Alonzo for their kindness and thoughtfulness shown to B.J. especially during the final years of her life.
