I was shocked and saddened to hear of Tony's passing.  I knew Tony during his Residency at Hopkins.  He had a zest for life, dedicated to his dear brother and Mother, and dedicated to his craft.  He truly was a Renaissance man.  A life well lived.  My condolences to his family.

Dear family of Dr. Tony Alonso…I am so sad and offer my deepest sympathy to you. I have known and worked with Dr. Alonso for over 40 years; he was a true gentleman, skilled surgeon and a kind, 
generous friend! I so looked forward to working with him and ending the work day with this simple phrase:  ‘stick a fork in it!’

 We were blessed to have known him. 

May he rest in peace.

My wife Rachael and I, have Dr William Alonso to thank for our son Jacob's now great health, who is just over 2.5 years old.  My wife had our son at St Josephs Women's Hospital.  Our son was born with an undiagnosed Diphragamatic Hernia at birth.  I knew Dr Alonso to be a great surgeon and a part of the St Joseph Hospital system, as he had done surgery for me as a young man, which possibly elongated my own life due to my terrible sleep apnea.  I had suffered from oversized tonsils from constant strep throat as a child.  When our son had to have 9 surgeries and was in Neo natal ICU care Dr. Alonso  guided me as to who to speak to and what to ask.  Dr Alonso, always answered his phone night or day for the first 4 months of my son's life, while he was between the NICU and Children's Hospital at St Joseph's.  I would call Dr Alonso and his voice alone was calming, soothing and reassuring.  He showed such great compassion for myself and my family when we needed his guidance the most.  He set aside his precious time just to introduce me to the great gastroenterology team he knew at St Josephs.  I truly believe he helped to save my sons life.  I can't wait to tell my son how crucial 1 great man played a role in his life.  DR Alonso will be deeply missed but NEVER FORGOTTEN, he definitely was a man for others  and contributed  as a member of the greatest generation  ever, AMDG ! There will never be or has their ever been a doctor I trust as much as Dr William Alonso,  his level of compassion was untouchable and incomparable to anyone else the world over. Truly a man for others...! 

I was a patient at Johns Hopkins.  I underwent Nasal Radium Irradiation  (NRI) which 20 years later The Wall Street Journal reported NRI a time bomb for head and neck cancer.  My friend, Arthur Starr, M.D., referred me to “Tony” who shared he had been Chief Resident heading NRI research.  We became and remain friends. “Tony“ also performed pro bono work by never declining to see a patient.  He traveled extensively in Central and South America teaching cutting edge techniques.
