1946-2023
David Charles Ruberg, beloved mentor and distinguished pioneer of digital infrastructure, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Raised in Philadelphia, he went on to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Middlebury College and then achieved a master’s degree in computer and communications science from the
University of Michigan. His respected career, spanning from work at Bell Labs as an instrumental team member on the first of its kind anti-ballistic missile system to early conceptualization of today’s cloud computing, culminated as a distinguished executive strategist.
Notably, David served as CEO of InterXion, CEO of Intermedia Communications (based in Tampa, FL), and Chairman for Digex, Inc. He held esteemed positions as Principal at AT&T and General Partner at Baker Capital. His leadership was pivotal in the historic merger of InterXion with Digital Realty Trust, Inc., where he served as Executive Vice President - EMEA and Corporate Strategic Advisor.
David's legacy is a tapestry of professional excellence, mentorship, and commitment to family and community. A consummate philanthropist for varied social concerns, David pledged himself to advancing children’s issues and education for all. He was a firm believer in pushing for continuous improvement, encapsulated in his statement, “Every company needs to control their own fate,” and always honored the power of individual agency in asking the question, “What problem are you trying to solve?” David's life was not solely defined by his professional success. He was a mentor and teacher at heart, valued for his wisdom and generosity. He was an avid pianist, lifelong learner, and 'Star Trek’ enthusiast. To quote the series, whose profound message he carried throughout his life, “I have been and always shall be your friend.”
Above all, David cherished his family. David is survived by his wife, Tara, of Tampa, FL; children, Brent (Glenda) Ruberg, Sarah Ruberg, Carson (Morgan) Grass, and Aimee Ruberg; siblings, Dr. Elizabeth (Ruberg) Johnson, Lewis Ruberg, Dr. Raymond Ruberg Jr.; the Hand and Hatcher families that he gained through marriage; preceded in death by parents Drs. Raymond and Theresa Ruberg. He was a pillar of strength, wisdom, and love, and was deeply cherished by his family, colleagues, and the many lives he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to a cause of the donor's choosing in memory of David's spirit of generosity and mentorship.
A visitation for David will be held Tuesday, November 28, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Blount & Curry Funeral Home at Garden of Memories, 4207 East Lake Avenue, Tampa, Florida 33610.
