Charles Barrett Funk, born July 14, 1940 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Russell Dwight and Wanda Barrett Funk. He was raised in a military family and lived in many different countries, which helped him to experience many different cultures and expand his world views.
He attended Vanderbilt University on a football scholarship and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a captain in the U.S. Army, and played Division-level football while serving in Germany. Following the Army, he earned a law degree from the University of Tennessee.
While working in the U.S. Patent Office and attending George Washington University in Washington, D.C., he met his wife, Carol. They were married in Tampa in 1971, and had one son, Brian.
He worked for Amcon Concrete Products and later, Tarmac Roadstone, as the President of Florida Operations. He then formed a real estate development company and built many successful and transformative projects in the state of Florida and Tampa area with his partners and family, one of the first being the Bank of Tampa building on Bayshore.
He endowed several scholarships to the Vanderbilt School of Nursing and was an ardent supporter of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.
More than anything, he loved his family and friends. This was constantly on display through his brand of humor, loyalty, generosity, and honor. He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, son and five pets.
