Carmen, known as Carmita, passed surrounded by love and family on Sunday, the Lord's Day, at age 92.
Carmita was born on October 15, 1931 in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, to Jesus Sanchez and Salustina "Nena" Crespo. Carmita received a Doctorate of Education from the Universidad de la Habana. After boldy leaving Cuba in 1961, she and her family came to Tampa, Florida. Carmita continued her career in Tampa and re-certified her degree from the University of South Florida. Carmita taught in the Hillsoborugh County public school system and eventually retired from H.B. Plant High School after over 30 years of teaching. She was an awe-inspiring woman who taught her children the value of education. She touched the lives of so many and truly made a difference in the world.
Carmita was preceded in death by the love of her life and beloved husband of 40 years, Evelio Florido; her adoring son, Julio Cesar Escobar at age 45; her loving daughter, Carmen Maria Escobar, at age 57; and her dear brother, Orlando Sanchez, at age 91.
Carmita is survived by her daughters, Teresita Bieberbach and Yvette Escobar Payne (Kevin); step-daughter, Carmencita Davis; grandchildren, Erika Ann Brooks (Chad), Gabrielle Nicole Peery (Joseph); and Madeline Grace Payne; step-grandson, David Davis (Ali); great-grandchildren, Noah Stewart and Jackson Evelio; niece, Hope Escobar Sayre (Joe); godchildren, Christina Shakespeare an Sixto Naranjo (Danielle); and countless additional family members and friends whom she loved and loved her.
All are invited to attend a service in her honor on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 10:00 am at Blount & Curry Funeral Home at Garden of Memories, 4207 East Lake Avenue, Tampa, Florida 33610. A committal service will follow at 11:00 am at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park.
Serving as pallbearers are Kevin Payne, Sixto Naranjo, David Davis, Ryan Lab, Joe Sayre, Chad Brooks, and Joseph Peery.
