76, born and raised in Tampa, Fl. Passed away peacefully at his home on March 11, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maria (Mary) and Eddie Perez. He is survived by his wife and soulmate of 55 years, Audrey Elaine Perez; children, Lisa (Jack Ferras); Trisha (Adrian Bush); AJ (Lydia Day Perez); grandchildren, Joseph, Tripp, Olivia, Cole, Jake, Ace and Beckham; Sisters, Louise Bolliger and Rena Kopp; and his sister-in-law’s and brother-in-law’s, nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends.
Albert was raised working in his mom and dad’s restaurant. They moved to Cordelia Street and Al became a ‘big brother’ to Audrey Elaine across the street, which later became his wife in 1966. 1 year later, they bought their first home together on St. Vincent Street and lived there for the next 40 years raising their family and working for Delta Air Lines. In 1984, while working at Delta, “Big Al” had a dream of opening empanada shops all over and started Mr. Empanada. What started as a hobby became his passion, with his wife and children working with him to fulfill his dream. In 1990, Mr. Empanada was sold and shortly closed thereafter. Following the tragic events of 9/11, Al was offered retirement from Delta after 29 years of service. Recognizing his dream had yet to be fulfilled with Mr. Empanada, he re-opened in 2003, after a 13 -year hiatus. Since then, Mr. Empanada has successfully opened 10 locations, a USDA Manufacturing Plant, a Franchise business and a Wholesale business that sells to, among others, 4 Orlando theme parks. Buying 2 buildings in Drew Park and servicing our locations, Big Al said his dream had finally been realized but wanted assurance from his family it would continue as a successful and thriving business. Albert Perez truly is the original Mr. Empanada/Mr. E.
Albert’s legacy is not only Mr. E, but primarily his love for family. With his old school beliefs and traditions, he always wanted his children and grandchildren to live on the straight and narrow. He left his family with the importance of integrity and character. His bond with each and every one of us will be cherished, and no doubt, he will be involved and a part of our conversations for many years to come.
The family will have a private funeral mass at St. Joseph Church and burial at Oak Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hospice [Burgundy Team] in his honor.
