Betty Black was born on August 3, 1934 in Rainelle, West Virginia. She graduated from Rainelle High School in 1952. Her high school yearbook notes that, “A smile and a wonderful personality frame her mind.” All that knew her would agree.

After the children were raised, Betty attended nursing school, graduating in 1972 from the College of DuPage in Glen Ellen, Illinois with an associates degree.
