Anthony Rocco (Tony) Iacovino, 88 passed away peacefully at home in Tampa on June 6, 2015. Born in 1926 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Giuseppe and Concetta (Lanese) Iacovino, Tony was a well respected father, teacher, & coach for over 30 years. His students and players can testify to his energy and passion. Excelling in baseball and basketball at St. Patrick’s Catholic School he earned All-State honors. In 1944 he enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served our country in the Philippines during WW2. Tony attended St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York on a basketball scholarship and majored in History. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gayle Noreen (Blackmon) and 3 sons; Joseph and Denise of Tampa, FL; James and Janice of Naples, FL; Jason and Betty Sue of Brandon, FL; his sister; Amelia (Iacovino) Hynes of Morristown, New Jersey and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister; Antoinette (Iacovino) Bonamo. A funeral mass will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Tampa, FL on June 17th at 10:00 am to be followed with a private burial at Sarasota National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to continue Tony’s mission to inspire education by donating to the Anthony Iacovino American History Scholarship Fund, benefiting Olean High School College bound students pursuing a degree in higher education.
