LTG “Cid” LaNoue was a modern pioneer and visionary giant in the field of military medicine, serving his country with distinction over 38 yrs. He was born in Tonawanda, NY, graduated Cum Laud, Harvard University in chemistry in 1956, and earned his MD from Yale University School of Medicine in 1960. General LaNoue’s additional training included an orthopedic residency at Brooke General Hospital , Ft. Sam Houston, TX, and general surgery training at U.S. Army Hospital, Ft. Campbell, KY. He was also a graduate of the U.S. Army Medical Field Service School and US Army Command and
General Staff College. Dr. LaNoue completed assignments with the 44th Medical Brigade in Viet Nam, served as the Assistant Chief, Orthopedic and Amputee Service, Valley Forge General Hospital and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. Other command, clinical and administrative assignments included Command of the Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, GA, Commandant of the US Army Academy of Health Sciences, the largest medical school in the free world, Deputy Surgeon General, and Commanding General of the US Army Health Services Command, culminating his career as the senior medical officer of the US Army.
General LaNoue was instrumental in re-organizing and streamlining Army Medical functions, units and commands, applying “Best Business” practices, optimizing the environment for leadership development, economies and better accountability, aligning with proven command and control principles throughout the Army. He promoted initiatives incorporating current and future technologies. LTG LaNoue was instrumental in modernizing evacuation platforms to get rapid life-saving treatment to battlefield casualties, and utilizing tele-medicine to communicate patient needs along their recovery journey. His cumulative and noteworthy achievements, insured that soldiers, families, and all other service members and eligible civilians, received the best health care and medicine available in the entire world.
LTG LaNoue was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He was a diplomat of the American Board of American Surgeons, member of the Association of the US Army, American Medical Association. Associations of Military and Orthopedic Surgeons, and the American College of Physician Executives. His awards include the Army Distinguished Service Medal (w/ Oak Leaf Cluster), Legion of Merit (w/ Oak Leaf Cluster), Bronze Star Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal(w/ 3 Oak Leaf Clusters).
In retirement, Cid LaNoue continued his insatiable desire for knowledge, application of the latest technologies, and the integration of science and his faith, promoting a Biblical world view. He and his late wife Beth (Elizabeth Gortner LaNoue, Colonel, US Army Nurse Corps), invested their lives in mentoring families and individuals at South Tampa Fellowship, leading, teaching, providing safe haven for, and organizing Bible studies. They were generous in investing in the Kingdom of God, and especially global missions and the next generation through First Priority Youth Ministries. They loved to travel to Pennsylvania in their Recreational Vehicle, and hosted many friends and church members in their home, and included them as guests in the many dramatic offerings at the Straz Center. Cid also lead many trips to the the Holy Land, and also traced the travels of the Apostle Paul. His extensive research of Biblical geography and archeology, provided a vivid backdrop to the places where Jesus walked, talked, healed, died and arose.
Cid and Beth were considered the Patriarch and Matriarch of South Tampa Fellowship, and were selected as the first Military Veteran Award Recipients.
He is survived by his beloved children Claire LaNoue, Alcide LaNoue, George Edwin LaNoue, Michele Spicer; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
