Oliver Wendell “Buddy” Holmes, Jr. born February 22, 1933 in Coffee County, Alabama, (Coffee Springs) near Enterprise. Father Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., mother Marie Elizabeth Hodges Holmes, both deceased. Buddy attended grammar school in Marshall, Texas, and high school in Cairo, Georgia. GO SYRUP MAKERS! After high school, Buddy Studied civil engineering /drafting at Lively Vocational School. He served in the U.S. Army, Occupation Service in Berlin, Germany as part of Company “H” 6th Infantry Regiment.
He married Beulah Ann Thompson on November 27, 1958. They had two children, Sherri Ann Holmes and Wendell Eugene (Tyler) Holmes of Tallahassee. Other family members: sisters, Patsy Ruth Herold of Ft. Atkinson, Iowa, Rio Rita Thomas of Onaway, Michigan, Rosa Octavia Constable of Covina, California, Juanita Elizabeth McKinney of Smith Station, Alabama.; brother, Joseph Warren Holmes (deceased), his wife Becky Jean Holmes of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; brothers –in-law, Bobby R. Thompson and wife Bertha, Tommy Melvin Thompson and wife Barbara, Willie J. Thompson and wife Yvonne, all of Tallahassee.
Buddy was a member of Freedom First Assembly of God church. He was employed in the Leon County Property Appraiser’s Office for 37 years. He retired in 1996. Buddy extends a special thank you to John P. Brown, Dick Brand, and Bert Hartsfield for the opportunity to serve the people of Leon County.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, September 18th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Culley’s MeadowWood Timberlane Road Chapel. A celebration of Buddy’s life will be held on Thursday, September 19th at 2:00 pm at Culley’s MeadowWood Timerlane Road Chapel, followed by interment at Culley’s MeadowWood Memorial Park.
