Joelle was the daughter of the late David H. Campbell and Madeleine LeMaitre Campbell of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was born on May 1, 1945, in Algiers, Algeria, where her father served in World War II. In the 1950’s, Joelle moved with her family to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Joelle graduated from Baton Rouge High School. She then attended and graduated from Louisiana State University, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
Joelle and her family settled in Destin in 1975. She saw Destin evolve from a small, relatively unknown fishing village to one of the premier beach destinations in the country. Her son Travis attended Destin Elementary School, and Joelle became active in volunteering at the school as well as substitute teaching.
The family began attending Destin United Methodist Church in the mid-1970’s. She was active in the church throughout her life and especially enjoyed the weekly beach service and services on Wednesday mornings. She also enjoyed many aspects of living in Destin, including volunteering for the Destin Fishing Rodeo.
In addition to volunteering, Joelle had many hobbies and interests. She liked arts and crafts, and over the years participated in needlepoint, crocheting, doll-making and making stained glass. She also liked to travel, with trips to Europe with her family providing life-long memories. Later her life, her favorite trips were the ones she took to Tallahassee to visit her granddaughters.
Joelle was preceded in death by her father and mother, David and Madeleine Campbell. She is survived by Wayne Miller. She also is survived by her son, Travis Miller, of Tallahassee, Florida, his wife Karena, and their children Olivia, Gracie, Britton and Avery.
A memorial beach service will be held at Henderson Beach State Park in Destin at 8:30 a.m., Monday, June 11. Casual attire is encouraged. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Destin United Methodist Church at 200 Beach Drive, Destin, Florida 32541.
