He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Alma Grace Harkins Martin; his daughter, Diane Junker (Tom); his three granddaughters; his great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews; cousins; and two bonus grandsons from Tom. He is predeceased by his parents; brother, William (Bill); and an infant sister.
Jim was born on December 4, 1924, in Princeton, Kentucky to Ray and Lillian Martin. He was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army. He earned degrees from the University of Kentucky, and his doctorate from the University of Missouri in 1969. A retired professor of agricultural economics, Dr. Martin taught at Murray State and Morehead State universities in Kentucky. He was a devout Christian who served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Morehead, Kentucky.
An avid University of Kentucky sports fan, he said “UK all the way.” He loved his family, golf, walking, education, history, and reading. He was blessed with good health for many years. He will be deeply missed by his family.
A funeral service at Tallahassee National Cemetery on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at 2pm. The Army Honor Guard and Big Bend Honor Guard will perform the folding and presentation of the flag, taps and rifle salute.
