Hilda Sue Mattox Walden of Westminster Oaks in Tallahassee, FL, went home to be with the Lord on March 26th, 2017 at the age of 83. Hilda is predeceased by her parents, a sister Jimmie Ruth Ellsworth, and daughter Krista Lorraine. Hilda is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Bruce Walden, her son Bill Walden and his wife Kim of Titusville, FL, her son Tom of Tallahassee, her grandchildren Billy Walden and Shelby Walden, and her nephews Tim Ellsworth (and family) and Mark Ellsworth.
Hilda was born in Lafayette, GA to James Mattox and Gertrude Veatch Mattox on May 22nd, 1933. She graduated from Lafayette High School in 1950. She completed Crawford W. Long School of Nursing in 1955 and earned her BS Nursing degree in 1969 from Florida State University. She had many positions in her long nursing career in both Georgia and Florida, including being the Public Health Nurse Supervisor for Manatee County, FL. She retired in 1995 from Southwestern State Hospital in Thomasville, GA. Her loving and caring nature served her well both as a nurse and a pastor’s wife. She was active with United Methodist Women, was a Master Gardener, and an excellent cook. She travelled extensively with her husband Bruce. She enjoyed exploring the genealogy of the Veatch clan with her sister Jimmie Ruth. She was active in the local UMC church wherever she resided, and was most recently a member of Tallahassee Heights UMC.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 1st at 10:30 AM at the Maguire Center, 1221 Commencement Cove, Tallahassee, FL, 32308 with graveside services to follow at 2 PM at Culley’s MeadowWood, 700 Timberlane Rd., Tallahassee, FL 32312
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Westminster Retirement Communities Foundation (4449 Meandering Way, Tallahassee, FL 32308), Big Bend Hospice (1723 Mahan Center Blvd, Tallahassee, FL 32308), or the church of your choice.
