She was born in Piura, Peru on September 26, 1932 and migrated to the United States with her husband and eldest daughter in 1964. They lived in New York where they all eventually became United States citizens. Years later, her family welcomed one more daughter and a son. Carmen’s mother would eventually migrate and become a citizen as well. She became part of the family to provide help to them. Years later, after retiring, Carmen moved with her family to Palm Coast, Florida.
In Peru, after finishing her studies, Carmen worked in a jewelry store, meticulously weighing the gold and silver, maintaining inventory, and overseeing special orders. In New York she worked for many years at a tool and die manufacturing company where she was the head inspector over the production of intricate pieces made of fine metals. Upon her retirement she and her family moved to Florida, where she become the full-time caregiver for her mother.
Cooking delicious meals and feeding them to her family and friends was her greatest joy. It was the way she expressed her love to all she knew. Her favorite hobby was crocheting and would create beautiful tablecloths, bedspreads, and baby outfits. Her ultimate favorite pastime started a young age, when she fished in Peru. Her passion for fishing lasted her entire life and you would often find her fishing off the pier at Flagler Beach, not too far from Palm Coast.
She was a devout Catholic who embraced her faith, her love for the Church and for our Blessed Virgin Mary. She was a Cursillista, a member of the catholic Cursillos de Cristiandad movement.
She is preceded by her father, Manuel Nuñez; her mother, Ana Garcia; and her beloved husband of 66 years, Fermin Pelaez.
She is survived by her children, Elvira Stepp, Victor Pelaez, Carmela Augustine; beloved son-in-law, Brady Augustine; her grandchildren, Adam Posada, Lauren Humphrey (Justin Humphrey), Anthony Posada, Andrew Augustine, and Ana Isabella Augustine; and her beautiful great-grandsons, Cooper Humphrey and Logan Humphrey.
A visitation for Carmen will be held Thursday, December 19, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32312. A funeral mass will occur Friday, December 20, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 4665 Thomasville Rd, Tallahassee, Florida 32309. A burial will occur Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Craig Flagler Palms Funeral Home & Flagler Memorial Gardens, 511 Old Kings Road S, Flagler Beach, Florida 32136.
