Jimmy Lee Hicks

Funeral services for Jimmy L. Hicks will be held on Friday, September 1st, 2017 at 1:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Tahlequah with Reverend Buddy Hunt officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 31st, 2017 beginning at noon until 8:00 Pm at Reed-Culver Chapel. Interment will be held at Tahlequah City Cemetery. Pallbearers for Jimmy include his grandsons, Trae Logsdon, Guy Logsdon, Jack Hicks, Cody Hicks, Kyle Bayles, Corey Bayles, Mitch Curley, and Indy Hicks. Honorary pallbearers include Jimmy Hicks III, Everett “Ed” Hicks, and Jefferson Hicks.

Jimmy Lee Hicks was born on July 15th, 1934, in Tahlequah, OK, the son of Perry Jefferson and Cloma Lucille (Wofford) Hicks. When he was young, the family relocated along with Jimmy’s sister, Myrtle Rose, to California in search of job opportunities. He attended Santa Monica High school as a teenager, but Jimmy never lost his love for his Oklahoma background and always planned to return. On February 26th, 1954, he married the love of his life and the best friend he ever had, Darlene Arnold, at the Little Chapel of the Dawn in Santa Monica, California. This union was blessed with five children and 63 wonderful years of love and adventure. Jimmy was a hard-working man, never sitting around waiting for an opportunity. He owned and operated Jimmy Hicks Floor Coverings, for over 40 years, La Cita Mexican Restaurant in downtown Tahlequah for over 25 years, and spent his free time being the best rancher he could be. This meant he never missed a day on the ranch caring for his Brangus cattle. When he allowed himself a little relaxation, he enjoyed doing a little hunting for deer or quail. Jimmy was an avid reader and was very educated in history, the history of the Cherokee people, philosophy and he devoted many hours specializing in collection first editions. He loved to travel with Darlene, attending book fairs in search of the next treasure for their collection. He was a sports enthusiast and especially enjoyed watching OU football, the LA Dodgers, and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Jimmy had an uncanny knack for memorizing sports trivia and could also tell you about nearly every Native American tribe in the United States of America. He never tired of his search for knowledge and truth. He was passionate, with strong convictions, yet was able to show his mischievous side from time to time. He appreciated the simple gifts of life, like the sun coming up or time spent with the family he loved and adored. Holidays were a favorite time, gathering his family, to share a meal and some conversation. His children and grandchildren were a constant source of pride, and they were always able to get sage advice from their Papaw. His mentoring was cherished and his council wise. He obtained the position of Master Mason and was a member in the Cherokee Lodge #10. A Christian by faith, Jimmy was a member of Nogales Avenue Baptist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Lord called him home to be with Him on Sunday, August 27th, 2017 in Tahlequah, OK, surrounded by those he loved most, his family. He was 83 years old.

He is preceded in death by his mother, father, daughter-in-law, Mary Hicks, and grandparents, Arthur and Myrtle King.

Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Darlene, of the home in Tahlequah. His children include Debra Rose Logsdon and husband Kenneth of Tahlequah, Jimmy Lee Hicks Jr. of Ft. Gibson, Marcia Alise Curley and husband John of Broken Arrow, Perry Everett Hicks of Tulsa, and Susan Lucille Bayles of Tulsa. He leaves one sister, Myrtle Whitson and husband Bill of Tahlequah. He lives on in his thirteen grandchildren, Kenneth Earl Logsdon III ”Trae” of Tahlequah, Jason Guy Logsdon and wife Christy of Stilwell, Jenny Marie Proffitt and husband Tim of Carrollton, TX, Jimmy Lee Hicks III of Tulsa, OK, Everett Joseph Hicks and wife Bobbie Jo of Siloam Springs, AR, Jack Perry Hicks and wife Sarah of Tahlequah, Cody Lee Hicks and wife Desi of Tahlequah, Jefferson Collin Hicks of Ft. Gibson, Alyssa Rae Stieg and husband Tyler of Houston, TX, Mitchell Johnston Curley of Tulsa, Indy Demetrio Pierson Hicks of Tahlequah, Kyle Westin Bayles of Tulsa, and Corey Mitchell Bayles of Tulsa. His great grandchildren include Jaiden Logsdon, Ireland Logsdon, Jerry Logsdon, Katie Logsdon, Ethan Logsdon, Haven Proffitt, Christopher Hicks, Samuel Hicks, Taylor Green, Isaac Hicks, and Harley Hicks. His one great great grandchild, Olivia Green as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones. He will be dearly missed by all those who loved him.
