Gerald was born on August 30, 1945 in Louisville, Kentucky to Charles William Sohn and the former Roberta Katherine Roehrig. As a youth, he attended Saint Martin Catholic School and enlisted at nineteen years of age with the United States Navy. He returned after two tours in the Vietnam War to Louisville. He married, started a family, and completed his education, receiving an associate degree in engineering. After graduation, Gerald began working with Naval Ordnance in Louisville, KY and then at the Corpus Christi Army Depot in Corpus Christi, TX. Simultaneously, Gerald was active in the United States Navy Reserve and served in multiple capacities to provide food service for the troops during routine summer deployments and other service related activities. In 1992, he served in the Persian Gulf War as a civilian and received the Department of the Army Commander’s Award for Civilian Service for his work overseas. In 1994, he received a Certificate of Commendation from the CCAD for his community service. He retired from the USNR in November 1993 and from the CCAD in January 2000.
In 1981, Gerald moved his family to Texas. He lived in Sinton until recently when his disease progressed. He was a member of the Holy Family Church in Taft. He enjoyed music, watching old movies, being outdoors and working on his arts and crafts projects. Once he retired from the military and civil service, he and his wife traveled internationally to Europe and Mexico. One of his greatest joys when he was healthy was travelling and seeing new places. He often shared with his family his fondest memories of while in the military visiting exotic destinations and meeting interesting people.
In addition to his wife Lucinda Valdez Sohn, Gerald is survived by his two daughters, Lucinda Nicanora Sohn (partner, Thomas Mark Kucera) and Juanita Jessica Sohn-Hunt, a grandson, Gabriel Alexander Sohn-Hunt, a sister Anita Darlene Carey, and beloved dog Angel. He also leaves behind friends and family such as nephews and nieces with memories and tales of his mischief and mayhem through the years.
