Jong Gwon Kim

Our beloved dad, Jong Gwon Kim, went to be with our heavenly Father on the morning of Thursday, June 6th, 2024. He passed away peacefully with my mom singing "Amazing Grace," his favorite hymn, and he joined in, singing along the best he could. He was surrounded by his wife and son, while his daughter was en route from Pennsylvania.

He was a faithful husband and best friend to Sook Hee Kim, a loving father to Michael Kim and Janny Kim (Dr. Benjamin Lee), an adoring grandfather to William and Elizabeth Lee, and a loving brother to Dr. Uh Gwon Kim (Mrs. Jong Sook Park), Dr. Sung Gwon Kim (Mrs. Mi Young Park), and Mrs. Kyung Ja Kim (Dr. Young Bae Suh).

We will have a small family celebration of his life on Saturday, June 8th, with a viewing from 9:30 to 11:00 am and a family service presided by Pastor Sunghee Kim at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please lift up your thoughts and prayers for Jong Gwon Kim and his family. (Korean translation below)

Remembrance for Deacon Jong Gwon Kim

Born to Kim Won Shik and Han Bok Soo on July 24, 1945, in Jinju, South Korea, Jong Gwon Kim graduated from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. He worked for Lotte Corporation in Seoul in the International Commerce Division and married Sook Hee Lim on April 3, 1974. He was invited to America by his elder brother and his wife, Dr. and Mrs. U. G. Kim. In 1985, at the age of 40, he immigrated to America with his wife and two children, Janny Hyun-Jeung and Michael Ju-Hyung. He left the comforts of a corporate job and a beautiful home in Korea to seek better education and opportunities for his children in America.

He and his wife started their new life as the owners of Hillside Dry Cleaner on Hillside Avenue in Floral Park, Queens, and the family settled in an apartment on Bell Boulevard, Bayside, NY. He worked ceaselessly alongside his wife, working 12+ hours a day, 6 to 7 days a week, and within four years became the proud owners of Woodbury Cleaners on Long Island. He moved his family to a house in Syosset so that his kids could have the best education America had to offer. Through his example, he taught his kids the value of hard work. He was very proud that both Janny and Michael studied hard and went on to receive Ivy League educations from Cornell, Dartmouth, and Yale University.

After his retirement, he found joy in playing golf, taking walks with his wife, and preparing and savoring delicious meals, often featuring vegetables he grew in his garden. He served in the church choir, singing as a tenor alongside his wife, who sang soprano. He also enjoyed listening to and singing along with Elvis Presley and Mario Lanza, as well as dancing with his wife. His love for children was evident as he took great delight in watching his grandchildren play and grow, especially enjoying their piano, violin, and cello performances. Additionally, he enjoyed traveling whenever possible.

He will be forever remembered as a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who loved giving chubby cheek squeezes to his children and grandchildren. We are grateful for your ceaseless work to provide opportunities for our family and for instilling in us the values of hard work and the importance of a good education. We hope you are at peace, joining your mother and sister in heaven. We love you. You will remain forever in our hearts.

사랑하는 우리 아버지 김종권 집사님께서 2024년 6월 6일 목요일 아침, 하나님의 부르심을 받으셨습니다. 어머니께서 아버지의 가장 좋아하는 찬송가인 "나 같은 죄인 살리신"을 부르시며, 아버지께서도 가능한 한 함께 따라 부르시며 평화롭게 눈을 감으셨습니다. 아버지께서는 아내와 아들 곁에서 세상을 떠나셨으며, 딸은 펜실베이니아에서 오는 중이었습니다.

그는 김숙희 집사님의 신실한 남편이자 가장 친한 친구였으며, 사랑하는 아버지로는 마이클 주형 김과 제니 현정 김 (Dr. Benjamin Lee), 사랑하는 할아버지로는 윌리엄과 엘리자베스 리, 사랑하는 형제로는 김우권 의사 (박종숙), 김성권 박사 (박미영), 김경자 (서영배 박사)가 있습니다.

김종권 집사님의 일생

김종권 집사님은 1945년 7월 24일, 대한민국 진주에서 김원식 님과 한복수 님의 아들로 태어나셨습니다. 그는 한국외국어대학교를 졸업하였고, 1974년 4월 3일 임숙희 님과 결혼하였습니다. 서울의 롯데그룹 국제무역부에서 근무하셨습니다. 그는 그의 형님과 형수님인 김우권 의사님 부부의 미국에 초청을 받고, 1985년, 40세의 나이로 아내와 두 자녀, Janny 현정 and Michael 주형와 함께 미국으로 이민하셨습니다. 그는 자녀들의 더 나은 교육과 기회를 위해 안정된 직장과 한국의 아름다운 집을 떠나셨습니다.
