Dorothy Irene McConatha Smith, 88, of Weogufka, went to her Heavenly home in the morning of October 16, 2022. She was known as Miss Jeanie by most of her family and friends.
She was born on November 20, 1933 in Coosa County, to Marvin and Ida McConatha and the last of 10 children. She lived most of her life in the Weogufka and Stewartville communities.
She was a graduate of Weogufka High School and in January of 1952, married her high school sweetheart, Gene Smith. They were happily married for almost 71 years, having a son, a daughter, 3 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Adron E (Gene) Smith, her son, Randy Smith (Julia) of Daphane, and a daughter, Angie Camp (Robert) of Weogufka. Her grandchildren that she held so dear are Chris Smith (Jennifer) of Calera, Caleb Camp (Allie) of Hanover, and Calee Camp (Tegan Nevarez) of Redding, California. She was blessed by 4 great grandchildren. Gabby Smith, Ella Nevarez, Mac Camp, and Wesley Catherine Camp. There are many other nephews and nieces, church family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Ida McConatha, 5 older brothers, Harold McConatha (Jimmie Lou), Comer McConatha (Elsie), Gerald McConatha (Agnes), Claude McConatha (Mary), and Victor McConatha (Lois). Also, 4 older sisters, Katie Mitchell (Walter), Annie Hatchett (Marshall), Maude McLain (Demp), and Louise Fleming (Wes).
She was a life-long member of Bethany Methodist Church in Stewartville, Alabama where she taught Sunday school, led ladies circle, and youth groups for over 50 years.
She’s known for many things including delicious cooking, cakes, and a multitude of gracious acts in the community.
She loved her country life, caring for her family, and all the many ones she considered family. She loved children, animals, cooking, gardening, and caring for all people. But most of all, she loved God.
A visitation for Dorothy will be held October 19, 2022 from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Radney-Smith funeral home in Sylacauga. The service will follow with Reverend Tommy Thornton and Reverend Dion Turner officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen cemetery in Sylacauga.
Pallbearers will be Chris Smith, Caleb Camp, Tegan Nevarez, Tommie Traylor, Bobby Hatchett, Kendall McConatha, Jesse Mooney, and Kenneth Hatchett. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Arnold, Jack Rayfield, Wayne Kelley, and Charlie Simmons.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dorothy's memory may be made to Bethany Methodist Church.
