Sydney
Sydney Oswald ‘Og’ Walsh, born in Whitney Pier, Sydney, CB, on January 1, 1926, 3 minutes after 12, son of the late Edward and Nellie Walsh, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2015 at St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish, after a brave and lengthy illness, with his family at his side.
Predeceased by loving wife Mary (MacLean); loving father to Edward (Kim), Alice (Darren), Colleen (Michael), and Joseph; beloved Poppy to Timothy and Ceilidh; cherished brother of Goldie (Lorna), Carroll (Russ); predeceased by siblings Michael (Jean), Vernon, Gerard, John and Loretta.
Sydney was very involved at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sydney, particularly with the ticket club. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and attained Fourth Degree status. His compassion knew no bounds, always willing to help those in need, never expecting reciprocation.
Sydney worked as a bricklayer at the Sydney Steel Plant for 47 years where he often served as a mentor for many young men who worked the blast furnaces with him. He not only taught them the necessary skills of work, but also instilled in them a sense of pride for a job well done! He loved his time with nature and especially nurturing his garden. The yard on Champlain Avenue was always adored with several varieties of roses and tomatoes galore! Regardless of where or to whom Og was saying goodbye from those in the Coop to K.O.C. bingo, to walkers by the house, they heard the words “God bless you!”
Visitation for Sydney ‘Og’ Walsh will take place on Thursday, March 12 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11 am at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church (formerly St. Joseph Church, 40 Cabot Street, Sydney) with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to St. Martha’s Hospital Foundation, 25 Bay St. Antigonish, B2G 2G5. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.twcurry.com
