Sydney
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mary O’Brien, Sydney, on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney, June 22, 1925, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Susan (Powell) MacLeod.
Mary will be missed by all that knew her for her caring nature. She was the oldest of 11 children when, at 12 years old, her father died suddenly, and she then had to take on a responsible role in her family. She then went on to raise her own family after the war. She enjoyed being with family and friends, reading, gardening, bridge, analyzing handwriting, crafts and rooting for “my Tiger” in golf.
Mary is survived by her children, Anne-Marie, Bill, Colleen and Danny (Ann) and her grandchildren, Megan, Sarah, Allison and Craig. She is also survived by her sisters, Florence (late Fern) MacLeod, Francis (late Jack) O’Brien, Sydney; one brother, Ronald, Toronto and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband Frank, sisters, Pauline Morrison, Jessie MacEachern and brothers, Jimmy, Hughie, Fraser Jack, Donald, John and Duncan.
The family would like to thank the nursing and medical staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their exceptional care.
There will be no visitation. A private family gathering and burial will be held.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory can be made to the Salvation Army and Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation.
