It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Louise (MacDougall) Kenney, Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at the age of 96. Born in Sydney, Mary was the eldest daughter of Hugh and Margaret (MacNeil) MacDougall and proud of her Whitney Pier roots.
Mary was a loving mother grandmother, great-grandmother, wife and sister, and spent her life caring for others. She lovingly raised six children with her husband, and when he passed away after 43 years of marriage, she regretted not having enough time together.
She is survived by her children Margaret (Wayne Lee), Joanne (Steve Addicott), Carol (Tom Murphy), Robert and Tracey (Chris Murray), her 13 grandchildren, her nine great-grandchildren, and her siblings Sam and Alma. She was predeceased by her husband Walter (Wally), her beloved daughter Mary Ellen, and her siblings Stanley, John, James, Francis, Carmella, Roddy, Helena (Aeo) and Olga.
Mary was full of fun. She loved to laugh, go to church hall dances and have good times with friends and family. She loved to swim, read Harlequin romances and when walking out the door, she always made sure she had “a little lipstick on”. She loved a good joke even if Wally had to explain it to her later. She had a natural charm and always had time to chat wherever she was.
Mary and Wally were avid campers, spending many years in the Cape Breton Trailer Club, summers at Ben Eoin Beach, and lots of travel in their motorhome. In her senior years, she got her passport for the first time and travelled further, including to Ireland with her sister and to sunny destinations.
She was a long-time member of St. Theresa’s Parish in Sydney and the CWL. Having helped raise her siblings and a large family of her own, she was infinitely practical and dependable and you could rely on her to lend a helping hand. She was always good to visit the sick and participate in all CWL activities, especially the Annual Fall Fair.
The family would like to thank the staff of the MacGillivray Guest Home and the Victoria Haven Nursing Home where Mary spent the last years of her life. They provided compassionate care to their mother.
A wake will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Friday, February 25, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., A funeral Mass will be at St. Theresa’s Church on Saturday, February 26 at 11.a.m. with Fr. Everett McDow officiating. Proof of vaccination and photo ID required to attend both. Those who wish to may attend via livestream by visiting TW Curry’s facebook page.
In memory of Mary, please consider a donation to MacGillivray Guest Home or the charity of your choice.
Mummy/Nanny Kenney was beloved by her family and while we were lucky to have her with us for 96 years, we will all miss her dearly.
