(Sr. St. Josepha)
Sister Mary Campbell died peacefully on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at the CND Health Care Centre, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, NS, October 17, 1923, Mary was the daughter of the late Alex and Catherine (MacPherson) Campbell.
Upon graduation from Holy Angels High School, Mary studied at Teachers’ College in Truro. In 1942, she accepted a position at Little Pond, NS and began what was to be a long and fulfilling career in the teaching profession. Mary entered the Congregation on Notre Dame in August, 1943 and made profession in August, 1945. That September, she returned to her former Holy Angels School, this time as a classroom teacher. In 1956, she moved to the mainland on Nova Scotia, teaching for six years in Truro and Pictou. She returned to Sydney in 1963 where she taught at Park Junior High before becoming a Reading and Resource Consultant with the Sydney City School Board. In 1980 Sister Mary retired from the career in education that she loved dearly. Her service, especially as a reading specialist, was greatly appreciated by parents and students alike.
Upon retirement from the school system, Mary continued to work with young people at St. Theresa’s parish in Sydney, both in religious education and as a youth choir director. Her artistic ability as well as her talent in the field of drama were gifts well utilized in the many parish pageants she directed. As well, Mary served both as local leader and bursar in several convents in the Sydney area. Sister Mary was a woman of faith whose life of prayer sustained her throughout her many years of dedicated service to others.
In 2011 Mary moved to the assisted living facility at Parkland, Cape Breton. Several years later, declining health brought her to the CND Health Care Centre where she continued her ministry of prayers for others, while being lovingly ministered to by our dedicated staff.
Sister Mary is survived by her brother John Hugh (Joyce), London, ON, and by her sister-in-law Joan Campbell, Sydney. She was predeceased by brothers James, Joseph, and George.
Visitation for Sister Mary will be held Sunday, May 28 from 5-9 pm at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday at 11 am at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River, with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
