Born in Sydney on January 30, 1938, Marlene was the daughter of the late Joseph and Shaffica Abbass. In the early years of her life, Marlene and her husband Terry were the owners and operators of the Steel City Tavern. Marlene lived a beautiful life filled with love and laughter.
Anyone who had the privilege of knowing my mother, knew how kind, brave and witty she was. Her guests were always welcomed into her home with open arms and a table full of food. She carried herself with such courage and dignity, even throughout her diagnosis with Myasthenia Gravis and recent brief battle with cancer.
Family meant everything to my mother. Sita was so proud of her grandchildren and was always there to share or brag about any of their accomplishments. Jordan and Alyssa were her pride and joy.
Marlene is survived by her daughter Judith Thomey and son in law Kevin Thomey, her grandchildren Jordan and Alyssa, and her grand fur baby Lola. She is also survived by her sisters Thelma Bourque, Ottawa, and Sister Lorraine Abbass, CND, Sydney. Additionally, she leaves to mourn, her nieces and nephews, who she loved very much.
Marlene was predeceased by her husband Terrance Webber, her brother George Abbass, and her sisters Edna Abbass, Theresa Mlinac and Carrie Abbass.
Our family would like to thank all our family and friends who called, sent messages or visited during this difficult time.
We would like to thank Pauline MacDonald for her love, support and comfort during the past weeks. Marlene loved you like a daughter and we are forever grateful for the love and laughs.
Marlene spent her final weeks at Hospice Cape Breton. Here she was treated not only with exceptional care but with an immense amount of kindness. Thank you to Dr. Ann Francis D'Intino, the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers; you made her feel like family and we are forever grateful.
As per Marlene's wishes, cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church at 11:00 am with Father David Rankin officiating. Burial to take place at a later date.
My mother gave so much love and joy to those around her. She would do anything for the people she loved. If you wish to honor her life in a special way, consider making donations to Hospice Cape Breton or a charity of your choice.
