It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather (Puppy) and great grandfather, John Bernard MacArthur on June 19, 2022 at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney, NS.
Born on August 17, 1933 he was the son of the late John Joseph MacArthur and Elizabeth Agnes (MacMullin) MacArthur of Grand Mira.
A Certified Management Accountant by profession he spent a few short years working for Pyro Minerals in Point Edward, NS but most of his career was spent in various positions, including Financial Controller, for the Sydney Steel Corporation in Sydney. Dad always encouraged his children and grandchildren to pursue higher education and he was so very proud of the careers and lives they built.
He was a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #138 in Sydney. One of his deepest passions was his love of harness racing. He also enjoyed swimming in the pool, reading, watching sports, and hosting the entire family for a sing song.
He will be sadly missed by his four daughters, Brenda (Alvin) Martell, West Arichat, Bernice (James) Kyte, Sydney, Charlene (Darin Cross) Chase, Truro, Joan (Donnie) Debison, Glace Bay, and his only son John (Jill Brewer) MacArthur, Sydney; grandchildren, Misty (Kevin) Martell-Ferdinand, Jason (Tracy) Martell, Tara (Dwayne) Cross, Whitney (Billy) Gillis, Rhea Chase, Aselin (Jonathan) Ettinger, Blake (Laura MacNeil) Debison; great grandchildren, Payson, Trent, Drew, Lillian, Carter, Nicole, Brayden, Tyler, Bailey, Garrison, Daxton and Jonathan. He is survived by his sister-in-law Judy MacArthur and Vera Miller, many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Miller, his brothers Joseph MacArthur, Donald (Boo) MacArthur, Sandy MacArthur, Roddie MacArthur , sister Anna Kehoe, sisters in law Theresa MacArthur and Mary MacArthur, and brothers-in-law Raymond Kehoe, William Miller and Charles Miller.
The entire family wishes to send their sincere thanks to Dr. Andrew Wawer, Nurse Practitioner – Alice Rogers, the staff of the Northside Community Guest Home, and the staff of the Northside General Hospital. Each and every one of you helped us through a very difficult time!
Visitation will be held at T.W Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney on Friday June 24th from 2–4 and 7-9. Funeral service will take place at Theresa’s Parish Church on Saturday June 25th at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Dennis Lamey officiating. A reception will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 138 immediately following the church service. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.twcurry.com. Inurnment in Resurrection cemetery will take place at a later time.
