Greg was born, and raised in Whitney Pier where he made his family home. Knock on Greg’s door and you were sure to be met by his two loving German Shepherds (Titus & Vanko). They were Greg’s shadow and best buddies. Throughout his life Greg connected with his dogs. Tucker, Roxi, and Bjorn all held a very special place in his heart.
Greg’s love of music in the 80’s found him touring with Now Voyager across Canada and the US Virgin Islands as the road manager and lighting technician. Later on he managed and was the lighting technician for the Sydney/Halifax band Criminal Minds. Not being satisfied to stay in the background, Greg progressed to playing keyboards for the local band Tayme. It was then in the late 80’s that Greg dated Karla. Little did the two of them know that after Karla moved to Halifax for work that they would reconnect in Sydney in 2000. By 2005 wedding bells rang and their life together began. Throughout their 24 years together they always found time to connect with family when they travelled. Here in Sydney and Halifax, New Brunswick, and Ontario where all stops with family for a chat, a meal or a heated game of marbles. (inside joke)
His love for music, and the Montreal Canadians drew him to local hockey games where he played the music during play stoppages. His love for the game eventually drew him to the Junior Miner’s hockey team where as the Director of Hockey Operations and a member of the Board of Governors for the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League for 18 years, he could be heard as the enthusiastic play by play announcer of the games. Greg ‘s spirit and love for the game has touched many in the hockey world. Current player and past players Greg always made it a point to stay in touch to see how they were doing. “Once a Junior Miner, Always a Junior Miner.” And at this time the family would like to thank Ryan Boutilier for his support of the family during this difficult time. Close friends are rare in a lifetime, and Greg was honoured to have as his close friends L.J and Donna Marie MacLean.
Left to carry on Greg’s kind spirit is his loving wife Karla, his daughter Jenna Parsons (Robert Parsons), his two cherished grandchildren Kacey and Nori, his daughter Shelby Mayich (Trevor Dauphniee), father-in-law Laurie and special friend Yvonne.
Greg’s memories live on through his siblings, Sharon (Ray) Baker, John (Paula) Mayich, Janet (Carl) Chesal, Tom (Nedene) Mayich, David (Kathleen) Mayich.
Greg, was predeceased by his parents John and Josie (Swatko) Mayich, his grandparents, Harry and Helen (Behune) Swatko; Kris, and Julia (Grbavac) Mayich, and his sister Julie Mayich.
Greg loved Laurie and Yvonne dearly, occasionally making a request for Yvonne's delicious tea biscuits. Greg had a very close relationship with Laurie who he fondly called "Dad". Greg would get many phone calls from Dad so much as that he had dad's ringtone as the Mission Impossible theme song. He never knew what dad had in store for him to do. Mostly questions centred around his iPhone.
Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the ICU unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Their care and compassion that was shown to Greg and his family is the true spirit of Cape Breton.
Visitation for the late Gregory Mayich will take place at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m on Thursday, June 13th, with a service on Friday, June 14th, at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow the service. Memories and condolences can be forwarded to the family though this link. Greg always dreamed of selling the winning ticket for the Cape Breton Minor Hockey Even Split, so if you are so inclined please support this local hockey organization by purchasing a ticket with Greg in mind.
