Donald was the fourth of nine children of Vincent and Viola (MacNeil) Campbell, born on May 22, 1936 and raised in the family home at Forbes Court, in the heart of the downtown, a territory he knew like the back of his hand. Blessed with a terrific memory of the people and places of the time, he could always help settle a dispute. He was a product of the local school system, Sacred Heart, St. Joseph and Sydney Academy. He worked for years with the City of Sydney Works Department and had lots of good stories and happy memories of the good friends made. He moved on to establish the weekly Cape Breton Highlander with a number of brothers and sisters.
Always a news junkie, he had strong views to go along with his informed opinions and seldom lost an argument, choosing to end a debate with laughter. A big, strong man of many talents, he was always ready to help family and friends with projects. He cherished memories of happy days at the Campbells' summer place in Irish Cove. Donald was a long time parishioner of Sacred Heart Parish and the most sociable, friendly and good hearted of men and best friend to all his nieces and nephews from babyhood on up, who will never forget Donald Mor.
Donald is survived by his sisters, Lexena and Helen Macpherson, brothers John (Dolores), Stanley (Margaret), and Brian, sister-in-law Sylvia, nieces Katie, Julia, Kirsteen, Jenni, Mary, Susan, Flora, Catherine, Jennifer, Mary Anne, and Christie, nephews Vincent, Jonathan, Colin, Archie, Tom, and Peter, and beloved grandnieces and grandnephews. Pre-deceased by his brothers, Sandy and Peter and sister Anne Marie.
Visitation will take place Monday, April 16 from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9 pm at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 am on Tuesday, April 17, at Sacred Heart Church, Johnstown with Fr. Philiposki officiating.
