We regretfully announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Agnes Elizabeth(Delaney) MacIntyre on April 15, 2024 at Hospice Cape Breton, with family by her side. Formerly from Sydney, Agnes resided in Northside East Bay until the age of 91 years.
Agnes was an independent woman who loved life. She had a passion for tennis, badminton, cycling, downhill skiing, ice skating, swimming, sailing, singing, piano, guitar, water colour painting, sewing, knitting, and gardening.
In her later years, her flower garden became her focus. It would not be unusual to see Agnes working in her garden until late at night, and in the morning find her sunglasses hanging from a branch. In her younger years, if Agnes wasn’t in her garden, she could be found on the tennis court. Her motto while employed was to always have your tennis racquet in the trunk of your car, in case you get a game. She and her daughter Linda were often ladies doubles partners and played competitively. They even won a NS Mother/Daughter provincial title in the 1980’s.
Agnes was gifted with a beautiful singing voice, and was often accompanied on the piano by her daughter, Katheryn. Agnes always believed in maintaining a consistent level of fitness throughout her life. Walking was a large part of her fitness routine as she got older, and she could be found walking on different tracks in the Sydney area as well as Pleasant Point Road. Agnes loved reading biographies, and enjoyed watching movies on Netflix, especially romantic Korean movies with subtitles.
Agnes spent most of her employment career working as a secretary for the NS government. She enjoyed the unique experience of being part of the Mission Staff with the 1979 NS Canada Games Team in Brandon, Manitoba. Agnes enjoyed meeting and working with many people throughout the province of NS, and was successful due to her incredible background knowledge of art, music and sport.
Agnes was born in Sydney to the late Josephine and Martin Delaney. She married the love of her life, Martin MacIntyre on August 24, 1954. Together they welcomed four children: Duncan (Sylvia Augaitis) MacIntyre, Linda (Wanda Pierrynowski) MacIntyre, Katheryn Gordon (Warren) and Mary Desaulniers (Jean-Paul). Agnes enjoyed spending time with her five grandchildren: Martin (Ashley) MacIntyre, Courtney (Jeff) Bowes, Brean (Guillaume) Desaulniers, Jordan (Monica Williamson) MacIntyre, and Austin MacIntyre. Agnes considered herself fortunate to have four great grandchildren: Sloane, Gunnar, Finn and Nora. Agnes is also survived by her brothers, Joe and Pat (Myrna), sister-in-laws Cecelia and Marie, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Martin in 2012. She is also predeceased by her sisters, Mary (Bill) Tobin, Theresa (Ted) Smith, Margie (Earl) Healy, Jean (Hugh) MacLeod and brothers Martin (Ruth), Ron, Jim, and Gerald (Margaret) and sister-in-law Betty. Agnes was predeceased by her extended MacIntyre family: Mother and Father in-law, Mary and Angus MacIntyre, brother and sister in laws: Ann (John Campbell), Donald (Irene), John (Chris), Kay (Cal O’Handley), Duncan (Gussie), and Mazie (John Cook).
