Born in Swansea, he was a son of the late Charles H. Goss and Dorothy (Austin) Goss Eddy.
Pete loved playing on the varsity football team at Joseph Case High School and admired his coach, Jack McCarthy. After graduation in 1965, he went on to earn an associate degree in nursing from Bristol Community College and a Bachelor of Arts from the former Southeastern Massachusetts University. After high school, Pete took a road trip across the country and back, camping, visiting national parks, and developing a love for travel. During summers, he worked on his uncle's boat, catching lobsters and swordfish. He joined Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) and was stationed in Cincinnati and Cleveland where he met his future wife, Andie.
He worked as a psychiatric nurse for the John C. Corrigan Mental Health Center in Fall River, MA and then for 35 years at The Providence Center in Providence, RI before retiring in 2012. He loved bicycling and for years he rode his bike for his 40-mile round trip commute to work in Providence.
Pete was a founding member of the South Yeast Massachusetts Brewers Club. He entered local beer making competitions, winning many prizes including best of show. In 1983 he attended the second annual Great American Beer Festival in Boulder, CO, winning second place in the Light Ale and Dark Brews categories and third place in the American Steam Beer category of the national home brewers competition. An accomplished dart player, Pete won several trophies with the Bristol County Dart League.
He was a creative and meticulous cook. He took a class to become a Bake Master and put on several clambakes in his backyard. He enjoyed photography, golfing with friends, practicing SunDo, and tent camping and traveling with his wife. He loved to be outdoors, and liked to go on long walks in the woods, on the beach, and at nature preserves. He had a gentle disposition; babies and animals adored him. All who knew him will remember him for his kindness.
Pete also enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Zachary Goss and his wife, Shana, of Cumberland, RI; his grandchildren, Oliver and Hazel; a niece, Megan Silva; and nephews Jonathan Goss, Alexander Wybo, and Nicholas Wybo. He was the brother of the late A. Wayne Goss.
His visitation will be held Friday, November 17, 2023 from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Waring-Sullivan Homes at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Rd. Swansea, MA. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be private.
