John Joseph McCann

John (Jack) McCann, 81, a long-time Swansea resident, passed away at home on Tuesday, August 22, surrounded by family after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of more than 55 years of Judith (Beaulieu) McCann. Born in Fall River, Jack was predeceased by his parents T. Arthur and Margaret E. (McCann) McCann, sister Catherine E. Tucci, sister Margaret Mary Driscoll, and brother Thomas A. McCann.

He is survived by his son Brian McCann and his wife Kathleen of Rehoboth, Mass., his daughter Nancy Pesante and husband Dean of Wakefield, R.I., his daughter Patricia Schmidt and her husband Richard of Saunderstown, R.I., his son Gregory McCann and his wife Elizabeth of Rehoboth, Mass., as well as his sister Ellen T. Higgins and her husband Edward of Yarmouthport, MA and Bonita Springs, Fla.

“Grampy” is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Jacob, Benjamin, Colin, Abigail, Fiona, Isabelle, Eliza, Steven, Jack, Patrick and Zachary. Jack also had many loving nieces, nephews as well as extended family and friends.

Jack is a graduate of Coyle High School, Class of 1953, and later earned his Bachelor of Arts from Providence College in 1957. After teaching for a year at Fall River’s BMC Durfee High School, Jack became a probation office for Fall River’s Second District Court, retiring as its Chief Probation Officer in 1993. He is a member of the Coyle Hall of Fame for basketball, was a longtime high school basketball official, and was active in the Providence College Alumni Association. He also served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves and retired as a Lt. Col.

Jack is a lifetime Thomas Chew Memorial Boys Club member as a sauna raconteur. His community service included being a longtime Board of Director for Steppingstone, Inc.

He enjoyed camping, traveling with friends, the Red Sox, Baker’s Beach, taking care of his yard, but most of all, Jack cherished the time he spent with Judy and his family, especially their grandchildren, each week.

Arrangements are under the direction of Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Road, Swansea, Mass. His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at 11 a.m. at St. Dominic’s Church, 1277 GAR Highway, Swansea, Mass.
