Jeffrey “Jeff” Coffey, age 67, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the loving husband of Karen (Williams) Coffey to whom he was married for forty-two years. Born in Fall River he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Ruth (Harte) Coffey.
Jeff was a longtime resident of Swansea. A graduate of Joseph Case High School and he attended Bristol Community College. Jeff was a master craftsman for forty-five years in the floor covering industry. He was an active member of the Swansea community. Jeff was a huge sports enthusiast. He was a Coach for several years with Swansea Little League as well as SIBIL, and led Swansea to two major division championships. Jeff was the manager for the American Legion Post 303 and also coached at New England Christian Academy. Jeff was the co-founder of the Mudville 9 team in the Newport Sunset League.
Jeff’s love for baseball began at the age of three. Throughout his childhood, he played on several baseball teams which continued throughout his adult life. In his thirties he initiated the start of his twenty year adult baseball career with R&R Construction. He played for the Mudville 9 as well as for the Seacoast Men’s Over Thirty League in New Hampshire. Jeff’s lifelong dream was to play baseball at Fenway Park in which he succeeded; he was chosen to play on the “All Star Team” through the Newport Sunset League in the mid-nineties. In 2018 Jeff had one more shot to play for the Mudville 9 at the “Old Timers” game, which was the finale to his baseball career. He especially enjoyed attending all of his children’s sports and activities, and he never missed one.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Kristen W. Coffey and her significant other Derek Botelho of Tiverton; one son, Jonathan J. Coffey and his significant other Jocelyn Legare of Swansea; one brother, Father Steven G. Coffey; one sister, Jane A. Coffey and the loving “Poppy” to his grandson, Brycen E. Botelho. He was the brother of the late Thomas F. Coffey II. Jeff also had several nieces and nephews.
His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at 9:00 am from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea, MA followed by a Celebration of Life at 10:00am at the First Christian Congregational Church, 1113 GAR Highway, Swansea, MA. Burial will be at Vinnicum Woods Cemetery in Swansea. Visiting hours are Monday June 7th from 4:00 – 7:00 pm.
