Dorothy was born in Vancouver to Arthur and Olive Hourston on Feb.8, 1928.
She grew up in East Vancouver and attended Hastings Elementary and
Britannia High School. She went on to study at a business college followed by
employment in the insurance industry.
Dorothy married fellow 'East Van-er', Bill Wallace, in 1952. They built a house
and made it a home on Elmwood Street in Burnaby where they lived for 41 years.
During this time, their family grew with the birth of Craig and Susan. Dorothy was
a skilled homemaker, taking care of everything and everyone. She often put
others before herself, including being a caregiver for her mother for several
years. She enjoyed bowling, pitch and putt, keep fit classes, sewing, knitting, and
having coffee with neighbours. Over the years, she maintained friendships with
childhood friends and enjoyed several vacations with their families.
After the children had grown, Dorothy went to work at Fine Arts Dental Lab
alongside Bill. In 1994 they sold the family home and moved to a new house in
South Surrey. Weekends were spent at their cottage in Birch Bay. There were
numerous winter vacations to 'the sun' as well as international travel.
In recent years Dorothy lived with dementia. It was during this time we
discovered the depths of Dorothy's grace and courage. The family deeply
appreciates the care and companionship of Jane Boutilier and the wonderful
staff at The Residence at Morgan Heights.
Dorothy's legacy is her family. She loved and was deeply loved by those close to
her. She is survived by husband (of 69 years) Bill, children Craig (Jill) and Susan
(Randy), grandchildren Shannon (Josh), Graeme (Tash), Iain (Janelle) and Scot
(Laryn) and great grandchildren Wyatt, Audrey, Lillyanna, Arabella, and
Mackenzie. The Wallace clan always made her proud!
Dorothy will be remembered for her kindness, gentle demeanor, love of her
family, service to others, those beautiful blue eyes, and her appreciation of a
good Manhattan!
A small, private celebration of Dorothy's life will take place at a later date.
