It is with great sadness that we announce that Battista Colasacco, 91, of Surrey, BC, a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home, with his loving wife at his side, on Monday, April 15, 2024 of congestive heart failure. Battista was the loving husband of 65 years to Elsa (Fontecchio) Colasacco. He was born on September 5, 1932 in Capodacqua Frazione di Capestrano, L’Aquila, Italy.
He was one of seven children to the late Antonio and Maria Carmela (DiSano) Colasacco. Battista and Elsa knew each other their whole lives having grown up together in the small village of Capodacqua, L’Aquila, Italy. They were married on August 30,1959. That same year they immigrated to Timmins, Ontario Canada to join Elsa’s parents, Sante and Bettina (Spera) Fontecchio who had migrated to Timmins, Ontario 6 months earlier.
A hardworking provider for his family, Battista was employed as a miner at smaller mining companies in Timmins until the opening of Texas Gulf Mines, later known as Kidd Creek Mines, in 1963. He got hired at Kidd Creek Mines, where he worked as a miner and later a underground heavy duty mechanic for over 30 years. After retirement, Elsa and Battista moved to St. Catharines, Ontario and then later, in 2004, to Surrey, British Columbia to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Battista was devoted to his family, doting on his children and grandchildren. Carrying on cherished traditions from Abruzzo, Battista was a dedicated gardener who could grow astonishingly large vegetables, and a talented wine and sausage maker. All tasks he undertook were completed carefully and fastidiously; no one could ever accuse Battista of laziness or sloppy workmanship. In fact, he was known to have the best looking lawn in the neighborhood. A generous host, he loved nothing more than having family and friends around his dining room table enjoying Elsa’s delicious cooking, while he was in charge of doing dishes and the pouring of wine and liqueurs. Everyone enjoyed hearing the remarkable stories of his experiences growing up in Italy during World War 2, leaving Italy after the war to work in Venezuela, and starting a new life in Canada. He was faithful communicant of The Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
Battista will be deeply missed and forever loved and remembered by his wife, Elsa; daughter, Tina of Surrey, British Columbia, daughter-in-law, Linda (Downs) Colasacco of Surrey, British Columbia; three adored grandchildren, Gregory, Lia and Alexa. He will also be missed by his only surviving sibling Gregorio Colasacco of Wethersfield, Connecticut and his sisters-in-law Adria Maria (Santini) Colasacco of Wethersfield, Connecticut and Dema (Fontecchio) Dybyk of St. Catharines, Ontario. As well as many loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Battista was predeceased by his loving son, Sandro Colasacco; his father and mother in-law Sante and Bettina (Spera) Fontecchio; his siblings, Gildo Alberto Colasacco and his wife Maria, Olga Secondina Spera and her husband Teodoro, Mario Colasacco, his wife Maria and their children Tina and Nino; Palmina Caroso and her husband Antonio, and Guido Colasacco; as well as his sister-in-law Flora (Giannunzio) Colasacco and brother-in-law Don Dybyk.
Friends and relatives may pay their respects to the Colasacco family Wednesday May 8th from 5-7 p.m. at the Victory Memorial Park & Funeral Centre, 14831 28 Ave, Surrey, BC V4P 1P3.
