Penny was born in Washington, DC to Evan and Louise Lapham. Penny graduated from Alice Deal Junior High School and Woodrow Wilson High School in 1957. Penny graduated from Syracuse University and went onto The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill where she earned both her Masters and Doctorate in Child Psychology. Penny served as the department Chair at Adams State College and interim Dean of the School of Social Sciences. Penny completed her career in education as the Superintendent of Moffat County Schools. Penny Served on many different boards and community organizations championing her passion for the development and growth of child education.
Penny was truly a renaissance woman; she not only painted, quilted, knitted, but also was also active as a rancher, equestrian, choir member, and had a 12 handicap in golf. Penny was truly her best when she was making something for someone. She was long a giver to the Arts, social organizations and most of all, her grandchildren. Her quick wit and competitive nature made her an example of excellence to all that knew her.
Penny was preceded in death by her husbands: John Young of Perry Park, Colorado, Harold (Pont) Freel of Villa Grove, Colorado, and Richard (Dick) Ott of Denver, Colorado.
Penny is survived by her partner Irv Corbett of Sun City West, Arizona, sisters Diane Crichton (Richard) of Sun City West, Arizona and Lois Kavanagh of South Yarmouth, Massachusetts.
Penny is also survived by her son John Daniels Young of Villa Grove, Colorado and many loved stepchildren, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews
Penny will be truly missed!!! Donations may be made to The Arizona Humane Society.
A celebration of life for Penelope will be held Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Surprise Funeral Care, 16063 W. Bell Rd, Surprise, AZ 85374.
