Patty Collins was born Patricia Anahis Trevino on March 17, 1938, in Mexico City. Her parents, Anahis Mandikian and Hector Trevino, welcomed her with love into a multicultural home. Mother Anahis was an immigrant, escaping from Turkey, and father Hector was Mexican, but had been educated in the United States.
Patty grew up in Mexico and attended elementary school. When she was in the third grade, her father Hector passed away. In 1948, mother Anahis married John Timourian, a distant cousin and an American citizen. John adopted Patty and her brother Hector and brought them to live in Los Angeles, California. Patty’s sister Gail was born in July of 1951.
After attending Dorsey High School in Los Angeles, Los Angeles City College, and UCLA, Patty began to teach Special Education for children at the Mary E. Bennett School for the Deaf. She also taught at Farmdale Elementary School in Southern California.
Patty married Luther Oran Collins on November 22, 1964. Patty, a devout Christian, was a loving wife and supported Luther as he studied to become a minister of the Nazarene Church. While living in Pasadena, California, Patty and Luther routinely invited foreign students for Thanksgiving dinner. Many of these students remained friends after they returned to their country of origin. Patty was an avid swimmer, loved to read, and conducted Bible studies in both English and Spanish.
When Patty’s mother Anahis could no longer live alone, Patty and Luther brought her into their home and took care of her for five years until her death. Patty and Luther moved to Arizona in 2004, and continued to invite foreign students into their home.
Patty passed away on December 3, 2021, after struggling with Coronavirus infection. She is survived by her husband Luther; stepdaughter Carol Wyllie; granddaughters Mira Elle Scott and Kristina K. Wyllie Jackson; grandson Christopher Rollie Wyllie; great grandchildren: Devon, Daniel, David, Dakota, Jaden and Ethan; great granddaughter Nova and great grandson Niklaus.
