Mabel was born on June 20, 1924 to Sam and Ollie Mae Fowler in Sparta, TN. She was the second oldest of 3 siblings and 1 half-sibling.. Mabel graduated high school at the age of 16 from White County High School and went away to business college in Chattanooga, TN. This was during the wartime and some of her family members were in Detroit working and convinced her she could be making big money. She moved to Detroit and began a whole new chapter which included meeting Dallas Jackson, her future husband, after she knocked him off a chair when she opened the door to a friends apartment.
Mabel married Dallas on August 8, 1943 in Detroit and so the story begins. They moved to Long Beach, CA in August of 1958 with three children and a one wheel trailer and $30 to their name. Needless to say they came across country with faith that God was leading them to give their family a better life. They always made sure that God was the center of our family life by prayer and bible reading in our home. Mabel worked at the Park Pantry restaurant in Long Beach, CA and she saved her tips and was able to purchase their first home in Long Beach.
Mabel enjoyed taking care of her family, making a home, cooking her famous Chocolate pie, Chocolate gravy and biscuits on holidays. She enjoyed birthdays, holidays and entertaining in her home and making everyone feel welcome. She had a smile always on her face and took such great care of her family. There were many people that called her mom or grandma even though they were not related as that is the way she made them feel like they were part of the family.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Ollie Mae Fowler, husband Dallas Jackson, sisters Elsie Bowington, Rachel Gailbreath, brothers Dewey (Jewel), Delbert (Sandy). She leaves behind her daughter Jeanie Fury (deceased Don Fury), son Dallas Jackson (Wendy), daughter Pamela Jackson (fiance’ Jim Sherrard) and five grandchildren Don Fury, Michael Fury, Donna Latham, Tom Fury, Kathryn Young (Jake) and seven great-grandchildren Chase Fury, Marissa Fury, Matthew Fury, Nic Latham (Cassie), Sara Latham, Jordan Fury and Madison Fury.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.sunlandmemorial.com for the Jackson family.
