Albert Frederick Newman passed away June 22, 2021 in Sun City, Arizona at age 105. As the fourth of six children born to Isaac and Selina Newman in Neptune City, New Jersey, Al grew up as a ‘Kid at the Jersey Shore’. Boating a fishing were a way of life for young Al. Later, World War II saw Al enlist in the U.S. Navy and serve as a baker aboard the USS Capella and USS Salem. He served 3 years while stationed at Norfolk, VA until 1945. After Al’s service, he married his high school sweetheart Elizabeth Landel on January 23, 1954. He and Betty lived in Spring Lake and later Belmar, NJ. During this time, Al worked at Fort Monmouth, NJ as a technician specializing in electronic beam and plasma devices. Al was proud that a device patented lists his name as one of the inventors.
August 12, 1978 saw Al and Betty drive across country from New Jersey to Sun City, AZ to their new home. It was here that Al’s creative mind once again kicked in as he explored the craft of stained glass. He became a lifetime member of the Stained Glass Club, serving as an instructor and mentor for many of his fellow artisan.
Al, a soft-spoken man, was a true gentleman loved and admired by all who knew him. Al’s giving nature was shown as he volunteered as a driver for the Red Cross. He faithfully transported people to and from appointments for 20 years! Al exemplified what it is to be gentle and caring about others.
Al is preceded in death by his wife Betty (2012). He is survived by brother James and nephew Robert Newman (Arlene).
