Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 24, 2012 at a 1:00 PM Service in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Sulphur, Louisiana for Ruth Rising Romero, age 91, the former Ruth Sonnier, who died on Friday, September 21, 2012 at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette.
Interment will be in Mimosa Pine Cemetery in Sulphur, Louisiana.
Tommy Henderson, brother-in-law from Port Arthur, Texas will conduct the funeral services.
Survivors include two sons, Eddie Joseph Rising II and his wife, Mary Barrow Rising of Lafayette, LA; Keith Michael Rising and his wife, Kathleen Welch Rising of Westlake, LA; five grandchildren, Kerry Fickett of Valencia, CA, Marla Clancy of Hampton, VA; Trina Mullis of Maryland; Gina Rising Crawford of Palm Bay, Florida and Elizabeth Rising of Sulphur; five great grandchildren, Campbell and Cooper Fickett, Ryan and Aoife Clancey, Jack Mullis and Aly (adopted); one brother, Ruel Sonnier and his wife, Gloria of Sulphur; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Rising of Sulphur; her Houston family step children, John and Jill Smitherman and their children, Emily Smitherman, Hannah Smitherman and Jacob Smitherman and Danny and Daphne Romero of Lafayette; and several nieces, nephews and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clay Sonnier and the former Electa Moss; her husband of 27 years and the father of her three sons, Eddie Joseph Rising of Port Arthur, Texas; her son, Philip Mark Rising; her husband of 32 years, Newton (Black) Romero of Kaplan; and one brother, Harold (Buddy) Sonnier.
Ruth was born on August 21, 1921 in Broussard, Louisiana to Clay and Electa Moss Sonnier. She was a resident of Lake Charles for most of her life and in later years moved to Kaplan. Ruth was employed as an Executive Secretary with PPG in Lake Charles, Louisiana until her retirement around 1975. She was a smart, vibrant and beautiful lady, who traveled the world with her husband, Black Romero. She enjoyed traveling, reading several Christian Devotionals on a daily basis, cooking and visiting with family and friends. Ruth was so friendly and outgoing, she made so many lasting friends and corresponded with them thru FaceBook. She loved her family with all of her heart. Ruth was truly a wonderful person and will be dearly missed. Ruth loved attending the International Sunday School Class at the Chapel on the Campus at LSU with her son and daughter-in-law. She enjoyed the fellowship with the international students there and made many Christian friends
The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's SOUTHSIDE location on Sunday, September 23, 2012 from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM and on Monday, September 24, 2012 at Hixson Funeral Home in Sulphur from 9:00 AM until time of service.
Pallbearers will be Jim Sonnier, Mark Gibson, Vince Sonnier, Ron Henrie, Neil Cade, and Garrett Gibson.
