He has resided in Sulphur for over 50 years and was a member of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church where he served as a Garden Angel. John was a veteran of the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Saratoga. He retired from Firestone Refinery after 35 years of service as an operator. John enjoyed hunting and fishing, but mostly spoiling his granddaughters.
Survivors include his daughter, Kelley Smith and husband Bryan of Sulphur; sisters, Ruth Erlinger of Bossier City, and Dorothy Sorenson of Tok, Alaska; two granddaughters, Kathryn and Elizabeth Smith of Sulphur; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Fabia Stafford; and parents, Matt and Hallie Stafford.
The family would like to express their appreciation to John's devoted friend, Jim Koonce, who also assisted in his care. A special Thank You to Christus St. Patrick Hospice and the family of Sharon Young for the excellent care given to our father.
His funeral will be at 2 pm Saturday, September 20 in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Deacon Jeff Chapman will officiate. Visitation will be held 10 am - 2 pm on Saturday. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com.
