HACKBERRY - James "Jim" Luther Carpenter, 76, passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2021. He was born on September 7, 1944 in Anderson Co., South Carolina to his late parents, James "JayBird" Morton Carpenter and Mary Elizabeth White.
Jim was a native of Easley, South Carolina and a graduate of Easley High School. He played football for Clemson University where he received his Ceramic Engineering degree. Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant stationed at Fort Polk during the Vietnam War. Upon honorable discharge, he attended McNeese State University where he graduated with a Masters of Science in Chemical Engineering.
He was a longtime resident of Hackberry where he attended Hackberry United Methodist Church. Jim enjoyed drinking coffee and telling stories daily with his friends.
Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Ben Carpenter and companion, April Coco of Hackberry; his brother, Joe Carpenter and wife, Kathy of Ft. Worth, TX.; mother of his son, Cynthia Lowery Carpenter of Hackberry; brother-in-law, Phil Tipton of Easley, S.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Carpenter; sister, Mary Elizabeth Tipton; and sister-in-law, Christeen Carpenter.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 18, 2021 in the New Hackberry Community Center. The Rev. Sheri Zehner will officiate. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service. Cremation was entrusted to Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home.
