Edith Marie Jacks

Edith “Edi” Marie Jeanne Yvonne (Bertrand) Jacks 1929-2022 Edith Marie Jeanne Yvonne (Bertrand) Jacks (age 92) of Sugar Land, Texas went to be with the Lord on Monday September 19, 2022, dying peacefully in her sleep.

Texas funeral services will be held at 11:00 Wednesday September 28, 2022 at The Settegast-Kopf Co @ Sugar Creek Funeral Directors located at 15015 Southwest Fwy, Sugar Land,TX 77478. California funeral services will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Cypress, CA in October 2022 after which Edith will be buried next to her husband’s grave at Forest Lawn.

Edith is survived by: four sons, Jean-Pierre Jacks (and wife Cynthia), Franklin Jacks (and wife Margarita), Gregory Jacks (and wife Valerie), Geoffrey Jacks, and son-in-law Bill Long; 12 grandchildren, Lizza Schlumbrecht, Eric Jacks (and girlfriend Kellie), David Jacks (and wife Kelly), Billy Long (and wife Suzette Christopher Long (and wife Stephanie), Angela Gonzales (and husband Mike), Jeremiah Jacks (and wife Alexandra), Sarah Torab (and husband Yaz), Esther Grayson (and husband Jeremy), Joseph Jacks (and girlfriend Jessie), Emilie Jacks, Adrien Jacks; 15 great grandchildren, Jeffrey Long, Maddie Long, Taten Blue, Kelsey Zakem, Veronica Long, Chloe Long, Michael Gonzales, Alex Gonzales, Isabella Jacks, Marlowe Jacks, Julien Jacks, Gwyneth Jacks, Benjamin Jacks, Zoelle Torab, and Zayden Torab. Edith is predeceased by her husband Joe who died in 2007 and daughter Veronica who died in 2000.

Edith was born on October 9, 1929 in Paris, France of descendants of the Bertrand, Lepaute, Henrotte and Gadala Families and was the 4th of 5 children. She was raised in Paris and was age 10 when the Germans occupied Paris. The Germans first cohabitated with her family, then later told her family they had to move to France’s interior. Edith witnessed all the horrors of WWII in France. She met the love of her life, US Army Staff Sergeant, Joe Jacks, at a party for American GI’s in 1944 which she and her sister Gisele attended. Edith was age 15 and Joe was age 24. Joe gave her the nickname “Edi” and that night she told her sister that she was going to marry this American “GI Joe”. Her sister told her she was a little girl and didn’t know what she was talking about. Three years later, shortly after her 18th birthday, when she no longer needed her parents’ approval, but with her parents’ reluctant agreement, she married her GI Joe in the church of Vaucresson, France. Two years later Joe, Edi, and their first two children, born in France, returned to the United States on a Liberty Ship, visited Joe’s family in North Bessemer, Penn Hills, PA and headed west to Santa Ana, Long Beach, and eventually Lakewood, California, where Edi lived in their Lakewood home for 62 years. Joe died in 2007 just short of Edi and Joe’s 60th Wedding Anniversary.

Edi was a very giving person and made friends everywhere she went. She loved God, Family and Everyone. She particularly enjoyed large family gatherings, talking with family and friends on the phone, music, cooking, and participating in marathons. During her life she wrote a book on French Grammar, gave private French lessons, produced films on French Speaking, ran EMJ Employment Agency, and was an Elementary School Teacher's Aide for the Long Beach Unified School District for 30 Years. Edi was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and great-aunt and will forever be loved by her family. As they say in France, it’s not Good-bye but rather “Au Revoir” mom, Until We Meet Again !
