Donald Staples

DONALD WOMACK STAPLES, JUNIOR was born on December 6, 1947, in Thibodaux, Louisiana, to Emmeline Roth Staples and Donald Womack Staples, Senior. The middle of five children, Don grew up with his four sisters in Baton Rouge, where he played football and graduated from Lee High School. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and was assigned to the USS Midway in San Diego. Following the untimely death of his father, Don returned to Baton Rouge to care for his two younger sisters, Christine and Myra, and subsequently enrolled at Louisiana State University. He proudly graduated from LSU in 1980 with a degree in accounting and began his work career which was to take him from Louisiana to Columbia, Idaho, and Texas. In 1986 Don became reacquainted with the woman who was to be the true love of his life, Carolyn Cassano Moreland, in a Sunday School class, and the two of them were married at Broadmoor United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge on October 19, 1991, beginning a wonderful union of almost a quarter-century. Though Don had no children of his own, he became a step-father to Joey Moreland, and continued his favorite role as a beloved uncle to his eight nieces and nephews. In 2006, Don and Carolyn moved to Sugar Land where they became active members of Christ United Methodist Church, including Don’s current service as one of the teachers of the fourth and fifth grade class.

Don entered into the Church Triumphant of all of God’s saints on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at the age of sixty-eight. Preceded in death by his parents, he is survived by his wife Carolyn; his step-son Joey Moreland and his wife, Christina; his grandsons, Sterling and Zachary Moreland; his sisters and their spouses, Jeanie and Gordon Mangham, Christine Jarreau, Susan and Bill Ferris, and Myra Forrest; and by his eight nieces and nephews, who serve as pallbearers today: Wesley Ferris, Julie Jewitt, Webster Mangham, Roger Mangham, Jerry Forrest, Emmeline Forrest, Neal Jarreau, and Claire Jarreau; by ten great nieces and nephews, and by a host of others all of whom were touched by Don’s generosity and friendship.

There will be a visitation, Saturday April 9, 2016 at Resthaven Gardens of Memory & Funeral Home located at 11817 Jefferson Highway Baton Rouge, LA 70816 from 2:00pm to 3:00PM with funeral service at 3:00pm. The funeral will be officiated by Rev. Ken Carroll of Broadmoor United Methodist Church and interment will follow in Resthaven Gardens of Memory immediately following under the direction of The Settegast-Kopf Company At Sugar Creek.
