Deena West Sargent was born March 10,1957 to Donald Kenneth West and Virginia Ruth West of Mesquite Texas. She lost her battle against cancer on July 12, 2024, surrounded by her devoted husband, children and siblings.
She graduated from Mesquite High School, in 1975 where she loved being a Mesquite Skeeter, and being on the football field with the All Stars Drill Team high kicking and dancing on the 50th yard line.
Deena was a constant in her children’s lives. Always present and volunteering in order to give her children the best possible experience in whatever activity they enjoyed. From early morning swim practice to late night football games, Deena would always put in the effort. She gave her kids an example of what a great parent should be, and for that they are grateful. She was also an avid volunteer for Fort Bend ISD for many years and was called “Queenie Deenie” by many. She was voted “VIP of the Year” multiple times for the hours she poured into Dulles High School.
She was a frequent supporter of the Fort Bend Women’s Shelter. She had an overzealous love for these women and wanted to give them the best start possible in their new life.
She loved dogs and firmly believed in giving homeless dogs a beautiful life inside and outside of shelters. During this time, she made numerous donations of dog and cat food to various shelters in Houston and Galveston. From adopting a puppy from a roadside mechanic to rescuing dogs that walked onto their properties, she loved and cared for them all.
Deena also had a love for puzzles while working on them at the kitchen table with her sisters, daughters and grandkids. For her, the more complex the better. Her love for crafting ranged from simple crafts with her grandchildren to wood working in the garage with her table saw.
One of her biggest loves was traveling across the beautiful United States with her sisters in the big RV. It was always amazing watching the reactions of the people in the RV parks when two sisters came stepping out of the RV. She and Greg loved traveling the world with one of the best trips spending a month in Italy. They took their children and grandchildren on many extravagant adventures, creating memories that they will keep in their hearts forever. Her grandchildren loved her so much they gave her two names Gamma and Meena which she called herself “Gamma Meena”. She loved singing, dancing and a mean margarita and being the life of the party.
She has never met a stranger. Deena loved everyone she met, and often gave unsolicited advice to anyone that would listen. She will be missed by all who knew her. Her laugh was contagious and could be heard from across the room. We are happy she is no longer in pain but the void she leaves behind is immense. The legacy she leaves is filled with thoughtfulness, giving to those less fortunate, love for all people from
all different walks of life bringing everyone together with a smile and clink of the glass… Cheers!
She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Greg Sargent and their children, Jennie “Blakeley” Jones her husband Kyle Jones, and their children Hunter, Heath and Hallie, Casee “Blakeley” Johnson and her children Chase and Kayla, Cole Sargent and his wife Brenna and baby Nolan on the way. Her siblings Jill Stone, Jeff (Teresa) West, Bobbie (Ronnie) Blakeley, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents.
We would like to thank Houston Methodist Hospital for the loving care that they have given Deena over the past 2 ½ years. Most importantly, the Family would like to recognize Dr. Siddhartha Ganguly for his unwavering attention to Deena’s treatment and care during this time. He was always extremely aware of Deena’s condition and communicated constantly with Deena and her family.
The Family will have a Celebration of Life at a later date at the Sargent home. In lieu of flowers, Deena requested that contributions to Fort Bend Women’s Shelter be made.
