Barbara (known to others as Barb or Babs) was born to Thomas and Marion Divney (Birmingham) in White Plains, NY on February 19, 1938.
Growing up in Hartsdale, New York, Barbara graduated high school from St. John’s in 1956. She had a passion for helping others, so she attended St. Francis School of Nursing obtaining her nursing degree in 1959. Barbara’s life changed when she met Larry Miller on November 28, 1953, at an 8th grade dance, starting their 70-year love affair. Barbara and Larry were married on December 26, 1959, at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Hartsdale, NY.
Larry’s career as a geologist and exploration manager required the family to move 18 times, which included living overseas for 26 years (from 1967-1982 and 1984-1995). Having lived in several US states, Germany, Libya, England and Tunisia, Barbara knew how to make a house a home, entertained like no one else and embraced every minute of the expatriate experience. As an oil patch wife, she became very involved in her children’s and community activities, including school librarian, Girl Scout leader, Sunday softball volunteer and throwing dinner parties for executives, military, and cultural leaders. Barbara loved traveling and all the experiences that came with living abroad.
Once moving back Stateside in 1995, Barbara enjoyed playing on her bowling league, with her bridge groups and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She also had a passion for her weekly painting class, painting exclusively on wood and then working with pencils. A great friend to many, she maintained friendships with all the overseas moves, spanning decades. She was proud to be an American, no matter where she lived. A lover of old movies, she could challenge anyone with her classic movie trivia. As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was the most caring, kind, good hearted, and selfless person.
Barbara is survived by her three children, Colleen St. John Dalton (Scott) of Huntsville, AL, Charles Thomas Miller II (Shari) of Huntsville, AL and Anne-Marie St. John Miller of Sugar Land, TX, her grandchildren Laura St. John Harris (Kade) of Huntsville, AL, and Erin Elizabeth Bowman (Matthew) of Huntsville, AL. Barbara was also Gigi to her four great-granddaughters, Lillian, Madeline, Olivia, and Emma, and Grandma to her granddogs, Darby and Huxley. She is now at peace and reunited with her love, Larry.
A celebration of life for Barbara will be held Saturday, May 25, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at The Settegast-Kopf Company at Sugar Creek, 15015 Southwest Fwy, Sugar Land, TX 77478, followed by a reception from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
