Surrounded by his loving and devoted family, it is with great sadness we announce the passing of Bob Fletcher, Sr. on February 26, 2022, at Good Samaritan Hospital. Bob is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Lee; three sons Rob Jr., John and his spouse Mari, Steven, Linda and her spouse Mitch. 5 Grandchildren Tia, Sara, Lily, Martin, and Matthew. Along with his sister Marge Jongebloed, his nieces Ellen, Joanie, Janet, and nephew John.
Bob was born in the Bronx, went to All Hallows High School. Moving to Suffern, NY in 1962 He served our country as an Army Paratrooper, 82nd Airborne, N.C. A very active union member. Spent several years as an active member of Antrim Playhouse. He is responsible for the creation of the Village of Airmont and forming of the Airmont Civic Association. Elected as the first village trustee in 1991.
In 1993, the attack on the world trade center left the country very vulnerable and hanging in the balance because the Trade Center was the financial hub of the world. Bob Fletcher was chosen to run the high-profile job. The $58 million temporary systems built on Vesey St and Liberty St. had over 6 miles of pipe from 8” to 60” and two 25 ton chillers that needed to be up and running by May 10, 1993 (less than 8 weeks after the blast). Bob chose his select crew from Steamfitters Enterprise Association Local 638. They had done what most thought impossible. Systems tested, up and running 5 days ahead of schedule.
The success of the job led to a permanent system being installed which resulted in thousands and thousands of man-hours that saved hundreds of fitters from a very slow time in the business. 9 years later the 9/11 event transpired. Bob and his sons volunteered the first week. Moving forward to help rebuild Tower 7.
Bob was first and foremost committed to his family. He will be remembered by many people for many different reasons - among those are his dedication and loyalty to his country and community. His contributions and his fierce love of his family and friends. Highly respected as a great leader and a great man.
We will miss him immensely. The head of the table will be open for Sunday dinner - knowing he will still be right there. His mighty spirit watching, guiding, protecting, and directing.
We have been truly blessed and filled with gratitude. He will remain in our hearts with a lifetime of beautiful memories.
A visitation for Robert will be held Thursday, March 3, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Route 59, Suffern, New York 10901.
